Trainee story
When Deborah first stepped into the Sprouts Chef Training Program, she was stepping well outside her comfort zone. Though food has always held a special place in her life, with a father who cooked professionally and a mother who has always filled the home with the aromas of a busy kitchen, she had never experienced what it truly felt like to work on a professional line. From the very start, the program felt like the real thing, demanding, tiring, and full of the kind of energy that only a working kitchen can produce.
Through her training, Deborah discovered a genuine confidence in her knife skills, even as she continues to sharpen them. She still laughs about the first time she was handed a comically oversized knife and had to figure out how to hold it. She learned, and she grew. She also navigated the occasional challenge, including a temperamental blender that earned itself a time-out, which is a small and human reminder that resilience in the kitchen often comes with a sense of humor. Working alongside Chef Leo, she found an easy rhythm built on banter, mutual respect, and a shared love of music and good television.
Deborah leaves the program with firsthand culinary experience, a broadened palate, and a deeper connection to a food tradition that runs in her family. Her sights remain firmly set on a future in politics and law, but bartending has caught her eye as well. Whatever path she takes, she is walking into it more confident, more capable, and more herself.
