Trainee story
Gylli entered the Sprouts Chef Training Program with contagious enthusiasm and a deep curiosity about the culinary world. From the start, she stood out as bubbly, highly engaged, and eager to ask questions, showing a genuine excitement to learn more about cooking and professional kitchens. Her interest grew through hands-on experiences like participating in FoodWise, where she learned the basics of food, visited farmers markets, and helped prepare meals. While she knows she still has a lot to learn, Gylli has taken ownership of her growth and is motivated to cook more at home and explore any opportunities that arise in the culinary field.
In the kitchen, Gylli quickly began learning routines and contributing to daily tasks, including preparing side dishes and desserts while paying close attention to detail. She gained a strong understanding of organization systems and how different kitchens operate, noting how much intention and patience go into keeping things running smoothly. Being mentored by Chefs Matt and Jessica played a key role in her experience. Jessica helped establish routines, explained expectations, and encouraged professional habits like carrying a Sharpie and notepad. Gylli especially enjoyed garnishing, where she used tweezers and practiced precision, gradually improving her technique and confidence. Organization was another area of growth, as she learned that there are many effective ways to set up stations and plate food.
Throughout the program, Gylli experienced significant personal growth. She started off very nervous and unsure of what to expect, but over time became more confident, professional, and comfortable in kitchen environments. Learning how to manage hectic moments by pausing, breathing, and observing others helped her stay grounded. She also discovered how important patience and clear directions are for her learning style, and she actively worked on communicating when she needed more clarity. Although she has often worked independently, the program reinforced how much she enjoys collaborating with others and being part of a team.
Sprouts helped Gylli build confidence, structure, and practical kitchen skills while giving her a supportive environment to ask questions and learn without fear. The program exposed her to professional standards, organization systems, and the level of detail that goes into plating and presentation. Having consistent mentorship and encouragement helped her feel more prepared and excited to continue learning.
Looking ahead, Gylli hopes to keep building her skills, whether in her home kitchen or through future culinary opportunities. She remains open minded about her path and is excited by the possibility of continuing in the culinary field. With her strong communication skills, love of teamwork, and willingness to learn, she is eager to keep growing and gaining experience wherever she can.
