Trainee story
Deisy joined the Stanford Kitchen through Sprouts with the goal of gaining more culinary experience and exploring cooking as a potential career path. Having already developed a passion for food through her high school culinary arts class, she was excited to build on her skills in a professional environment. When she first started the internship, the kitchen felt overwhelming and confusing as she learned where everything was and adjusted to the fast paced environment. Over time, however, she became much more comfortable, built relationships with managers and coworkers, and gained confidence in her abilities. Deisy especially enjoyed working alongside other interns who were learning alongside her and appreciated how patient, supportive, and understanding the Stanford team was. Throughout the internship, she strengthened her knife skills, organization, communication, and overall kitchen awareness while working on stations like the cold line and panini station. Her experience helped her develop a deeper understanding of professional cooking and sparked an interest in learning new recipes and exploring baking. While she entered the program considering careers in either culinary arts or nursing, the internship reinforced her interest in continuing to explore culinary education while also keeping options open in the medical field, including a future career as an OB-GYN.
