Trainee story

Adama is a vibrant and outgoing intern who brings a big personality to every room she enters. Before joining Sprouts, she already had a love for cooking, often preparing meals for herself and volunteering at a soup kitchen prior to the pandemic. With a passion for trying new things, Adama saw Sprouts as the perfect opportunity to step into a fast-paced kitchen environment, learn from different chefs, and earn a certificate that could help her in the future. Although she had previously been more involved in political and advocacy work, she was eager to switch things up and challenge herself at The Musket Room with chef Max Cruz. At the start of her internship, Adama admitted she was nervous — stepping into a kitchen with strangers and doing tasks she’d never done before felt intimidating. However, it didn’t take long for her to find her rhythm and enjoy the energy of the kitchen. Working alongside chefs Loren and Kia became a highlight of her experience; they taught her valuable lessons about communication, asking for help, and working as a team. For Adama, one of the most exciting parts of her internship was being introduced to the world of pastry. Baking was something she had always struggled with, often getting measurements wrong when following recipes from YouTube or TikTok, but at The Musket Room, she learned how to properly bake banana bread and cake, gaining confidence and precision in the process. The kitchen’s fast pace was familiar to Adama, who had previously worked at Burger King, where she handled late-night rushes and the chaos of impatient Uber drivers. That experience helped her remain calm under pressure, knowing when to take a breather or ask for guidance. Through Sprouts, Adama also reflected on valuable lessons she learned during her time with exalt — especially how to not let people control her emotions and how to navigate challenges with patience and self-awareness.Sprouts has been a transformative experience for Adama, showing her that communication, multitasking, and critical thinking are just as important in the kitchen as they are in life. While she originally dreamed of becoming a doctor, she now wants to pursue baking as a hobby, adding a layer of creativity and joy to her future. Above all, Adama is grateful for the supportive and fun environment at Sprouts, where she not only learned new culinary skills but also grew personally and found excitement in stepping outside of her comfort zone.
