Intern’s Story: Karem is a straight A student from Oakland High School, a child of immigrants from Mexico, and works part-time at her mother’s party supply store in addition to interning for the Chef-In-Training program. She is an incredibly hard worker! Stemming from an early love of making pancakes with fresh fruit, Karem’s drive to learn more about cooking pushed her to enroll in the Future Chef’s Academy when she was a young 5th grader. Since then, Karem has made the most of every opportunity to put herself on the path to success and develop her leadership skills, including taking classes at her local community college, volunteering at the food bank to prep food and meals for those in need, starring in school musicals, and participating in her school’s Youth Law Academy. Karem works hard to maintain the balance in her life while also working to help support her family, often cooking meals for everyone at home while her parents work late hours. After spending her summer interning at Oakland’s Nido Kitchen & Bar, Karem has become a valued and appreciated member of the kitchen team! She has blown everyone away with her attention to detail and willingness to learn.
Future Goals: Karem is currently focusing on finishing high school, and is determined to attend one of her top choice colleges!

TESTIMONIAL

“Working at Nido has been great, everyone was friendly and funny. It takes a while at first to get used to the environment, but what you put in is what you get out, it has been a good experience overall!”
